MONEY SCENARIOS / PUT THE NUMBERS IN CONTEXT
Translate inflation, compounding and long-term assumptions into understandable dollar amounts.
Calculated in your browser. Enter a scenario, see the math and compare the trade-offs. Example values are not live data.
MONEY SCENARIOS / PUT THE NUMBERS IN CONTEXT
Use an assumed annual rate or your own matching CPI index values to compare dollar purchasing power.
Editor's note: Preset numbers illustrate the formula; they are not current market prices, offers or forecasts. Change the inputs to match your own scenario. All money amounts are USD.
Enable JavaScript to use the interactive inputs. The calculation method and limitations remain available below.
Rate scenario: ending equivalent = starting dollars x (1 + annual rate / 100)^years. CPI scenario: ending equivalent = starting dollars x ending CPI / starting CPI. Unchanged nominal cash in starting-period dollars = starting dollars / the same factor.
No built-in historical CPI series or live-data connection is included. CPI defaults 100 and 130 are invented index examples, not observations for named years. Use the same CPI series, geography, seasonal-adjustment basis and comparable months or annual averages. CPI is an average basket, not your personal inflation rate.
Methodology reference: BLS: CPI Inflation Calculator methodology. Reference checked September 11, 2026; no live data feed is used.
For a historical comparison, copy two matching index observations from BLS and keep their dates and series definition with your notes.

Project a monthly contribution plan under a constant effective annual return and compare contributions with growth.

The entered return is an effective annual rate. Monthly rate = (1 + annual return / 100)^(1/12) - 1. Each month, the balance compounds and the monthly contribution is added. Gains = ending balance - starting investment - all contributions.
Assumes a constant return and month-end contributions. No taxes, investment fees, withdrawals or inflation adjustment. Negative returns are supported down to -99%, but real returns fluctuate and loss of principal is possible. A portfolio with contributions cannot be assigned a valid realized CAGR merely by comparing its initial and final balance.

Test both lower and negative-return scenarios before relying on a future balance for a spending commitment.

MONEY SCENARIOS / PUT THE NUMBERS IN CONTEXT
Compare simple interest with compounding on a constant principal, using a nominal annual interest rate.
Editor's note: Preset numbers illustrate the formula; they are not current market prices, offers or forecasts. Change the inputs to match your own scenario. All money amounts are USD.
Enable JavaScript to use the interactive inputs. The calculation method and limitations remain available below.
Simple balance = principal x (1 + annual nominal rate / 100 x years). Compound balance = principal x (1 + rate / 100 / periods)^(periods x years). Compound effective annual yield = (1 + rate / 100 / periods)^periods - 1.
No additional deposits, withdrawals, fees or taxes. Fractional years use fractional exponents in the compound model; real institutions may credit interest only on specified dates and use different day-count rules. Daily means 365 equal periods, not a calendar-aware interest accrual.

Check whether your account quotes a nominal interest rate or APY before comparing the result with an actual statement.
